How to Sound Clear on Zoom and Video Calls
Fix the setup first — a consistent microphone distance, a quieter room and a quick recorded test — then adjust delivery: slightly slower pace, clear sentence endings and short pauses before key points. Most clarity problems on calls are a mix of equipment and pacing, not a bad voice.

Is it my voice or my setup?
Record a one-minute test call with yourself, using the exact device, room and software you will use for the real meeting. Listen back on headphones. Echo, hum, uneven volume or a distant, hollow sound are usually room and microphone problems. Rushed phrases, swallowed sentence endings and a flat line of pitch are delivery problems.
Sort the issues into those two piles before trying to fix anything. A delivery exercise will not fix an echoing room, and a better microphone will not fix rushing.
How should I set up the microphone and room?
Keep your mouth at a consistent distance from the microphone, whether it is built into a laptop, a headset or a separate mic. Moving in and out changes your volume more than you think. Soft furnishings — a rug, curtains, a sofa, a bookshelf — reduce the echo that makes voices sound distant. Turn off fans and close windows facing the street where possible.
Check the input device in your call software; many people speak into a webcam microphone across the room while a better headset sits unused.
How should I pace my delivery?
Video calls add small delays, so overlapping speech is harder to follow than in a room. Slow down slightly, finish your sentences fully, and leave a short pause before a key point or a question. Give figures room: say the number, then the unit, then a beat before the comparison.
It can help to mark your notes with / for a short pause and // for a change of topic. Keep the marks few, so they guide you rather than distract you.
How do I avoid tiring my voice in long meetings?
Speaking louder to compensate for a poor microphone is a common source of fatigue. Fix the setup instead of pushing volume. Sip water, take short breaks between calls when you can, and avoid clearing your throat repeatedly. If hoarseness or discomfort persists, ask a qualified medical professional; voice coaching does not diagnose or treat it.
What should I rehearse before an important call?
The first thirty seconds, the transitions between sections, and the ending. Those are the moments where people rush. Rehearse them aloud through your actual setup, record once, listen once, and change one thing.
Executive and media voice coaching can work directly with your real deck, script or recorded call, using the same screen and microphone you present with.
